APM Terminals Poti - JSC Poti Seaposrt Corporation

Global plastic production has steadily increased worldwide. Being the part of A.P. Moller – Maersk Group and aligning with its strategy to minimize the use of plastic, APM Terminals Poti is taking proactive steps to address plastic waste and promote corporate sustainability. In 2022, the company purchased 1,132,000 disposable cups and 29,100 plastic bottles. Due to increasing usage of single-use plastic water bottles and cups, an immediate response team has been formed to analyze and solve the challenge.

In April –August 2023, APM Terminals Poti  implemented a green initiative aimed to eliminate plastic cups consumption by 100%, reduce bottled water usage by 70% and optimize dispenser locations. It involved replacing single-use plastic bottles and cups with reusable metal bottles personalized for each employee, replacing disposable cups by paper ones and purchasing reusable tableware for meeting rooms. Additionally, awareness campaigns were conducted to educate employees and foster behavior change; the team was actively engaged in an awareness campaign through social media channels and in-person communication with company employees.

The initiative resulted in a significant reduction of plastic waste, with over a million plastic cups and bottles saved from becoming waste. The company’s proactive approach, including internal communication, employee engagement, and providing reusable alternatives, contributed to a cultural shift towards sustainability within the organization.
