The EHS#34 standard denes the minimum requirements for waste management at PepsiCo facilities and provides a systemic approach to the issue. A written waste management plan (WMP) has been elaborated and is being implemented in the company. It details staff roles, responsibilities and accountability, waste sorting, recording and control procedures, etc.
Classication is important for proper waste management; accordingly, the company uses a tool for waste inventory and surveillance. The waste generation process is controlled on a monthly basis and information is gathered and used for periodic reporting. The company is guided by the following hierarchy during waste reduction: reduction (immediate process of production), secondary use (without additional processing), processing (initial or new product), recovery (processing with the purpose of restoring useful properties) and transportation to the landll. The company takes all measures possible to reduce, recycle and restore waste to prevent a harmful impact on the environment caused during transportation.
