Poti Sea Port Corporation
In June 2018, modern, eco-friendly technology for bulk cargo operations was put into practice at the Poti port.
The traditional method encompasses the loading of bulk cargo (for example, copper concentrate) directly at the docks and then onto the ship; the process creates inorganic dust and waste which then gets into the water and the atmosphere. As a result, a huge amount of damage is done to the ecosystem while at the same time the customer experiences damage as a part of his cargo is lost. The new technology provides the possibility for a company to twice decrease the negative impact on the environment as well as twice decrease the volume of cargo loss. With the use of the innovative rotating spreader, it is possible to relocate bulk cargo within the containers and then load it directly onto the ship. The rotating spreaders decrease cargo waste from 2% to 1% which means that about 2,600 tons of copper dust will not make its way into the environment.
At the same time, the cargo processing process has become more effective: instead of 5,000 tons of cargo with three cranes, the company processes 10,000 tons of cargo with one crane in the same amount of time. The port plans to use the same technology for other types of bulk cargo as it results in multiple outcomes such as the demonstrated positive factor vis-à-vis the environment, costumer resources, cargo turnover and port capacity.
„Poti Sea Port is committed to maintaining safe and responsible business activity both inside and outside of the company. We are precisely pursuing this aim with our new and innovative project that will have a positive impact on the environment and increase the capacity of the sea port“.
