Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metechi Palace
From November 2022 to December 2023, Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metechi Palace has undertaken a comprehensive sustainability initiative aimed at significantly reducing its environmental impact. This initiative is part of the broader mission of Marriott International to lower the carbon footprint across its global operations. The hotel's strategy focuses on several key areas: eliminating plastic use, managing food waste, reducing electricity consumption, and raising awareness about environmental issues among stakeholders.
In their efforts to eliminate plastic, the hotel has replaced plastic bottles with glass ones and minimized the use of small plastic toiletry bottles by switching to larger refillable dispensers. They also introduced recyclable bins in rooms and switched from plastic pens to pencils for events, significantly reducing plastic waste. Additionally, water dispensers in the office and gym now use glass bottles, and paper straws are available upon guest request.
Partnerships have played a crucial role in these initiatives. For example, the hotel collaborated with E-Space to install turbocharging stations for electric cars and worked with local recycling companies POLIVIM and Kere to handle plastic and glass waste.
In 2023, the hotel recycled 18 tons of plastic, 12 tons of glass and 100 kg of electronic waste; 656 liters of used oil were converted into biodiesel. The solar panels produced 16,000 KW-h of electricity; integration of energy-efficient lighting and optimized building insulation, as well as automated heating and cooling systems further contributed to reduced energy consumption.
By fostering a sense of environmental responsibility, the hotel aims to embed sustainable practices into the daily lives of its employees to ensure long-term benefits both environmentally and economically.
The hotel’s ongoing commitment includes ambitious future goals of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, reducing water intensity by 15%, and cutting food waste by 50%.
